Historical Overview

Stradey Park opened in 1879 for use by Llanelli RFC. It was chosen to host its first international in 1887 as part of the Home Nations Championship, though the match against England was moved to the adjacent cricket ground due to a frozen pitch. The ground successfully hosted its first international on 7 March 1891, when Wales played Ireland. In 1893, Stradey Park was the venue for Wales's first ever Triple Crown, with Arthur Gould captaining the side to victory over Ireland. The ground saw many memorable matches, including Llanelli RFC's famous victories over Australia in 1967 and 1992, and over New Zealand in 1972. Stradey Park hosted Rugby World Cup matches in 1991 and 1992, both featuring Argentina. Due to financial difficulties following the game turning professional, the ground was sold to the Welsh Rugby Union in 1997 for £1.25 million, and repurchased by Llanelli RFC Ltd in 2005. When the Scarlets regional side was formed in 2003, they played the majority of their home fixtures at Stradey Park until moving to Parc y Scarlets in 2008.

Did You Know

Stradey Park was home to Llanelli RFC for 129 years, from 1879 to 2008. The ground's most famous moment came on 31 October 1972, when Llanelli beat the All Blacks 9-3, a result celebrated in Welsh rugby folklore and commemorated in the song 'Sosban Fach'. Llanelli also beat Australia there in 1967 and 1992. The ground hosted Wales's first ever Triple Crown in 1893. Before 1990, the capacity was 22,500, but this was reduced to 10,800 as standing areas were converted. Stradey Park hosted Rugby World Cup matches in both 1991 and 1999, and a rugby league international between Wales and Lebanon in the 2000 World Cup. The ground also hosted Llanelli A.F.C.'s UEFA Cup matches in the 2006-07 season. The site is now housing.
