About Parc y Scarlets

Parc y Scarlets is the modern home of the Scarlets, one of Welsh rugby's most passionate and historic clubs. Opened in November 2008, the 14,870-capacity stadium replaced the legendary Stradey Park in Llanelli and was designed to give the Scarlets a state-of-the-art home fit for the professional era. The Scarlets, previously known as Llanelli RFC, are one of the most decorated clubs in Welsh rugby history.

Historical Overview

For over a century, the spirit of Llanelli rugby was defined by the hallowed turf of Stradey Park. As the sport transitioned into the professional era, the need for a modern facility became essential. In November 2008, the club moved to its new home, Parc y Scarlets, located in the Pemberton area of Llanelli. The stadium was constructed at a cost of 23 million pounds and serves as the primary venue for the Scarlets and Llanelli RFC. The transition marked a significant shift in Welsh sporting infrastructure, providing a purpose-built arena designed to meet the demands of top-tier rugby while maintaining the club's deep-rooted connection to the community. The stadium officially opened on 15 November 2008, with Llanelli RFC playing the first match against Cardiff RFC. Due to safety regulations requiring a new venue to host events at restricted capacities before full authorization, the initial matches were held with limited crowds. A formal opening ceremony followed on 31 January 2009, when the Scarlets faced the Barbarians. Architecturally, the stadium features a capacity of 14,870, which can be extended for larger events. It includes a terrace area in the North Stand, a feature specifically requested by the Scarlets Supporters Trust to preserve the traditional experience of standing during matches. Beyond rugby, the venue functions as a multi-purpose asset, hosting conference events and music performances to ensure its long-term financial viability. Today, Parc y Scarlets stands as a modern fortress that honors the heritage of its predecessor while providing a professional environment for the team to compete in the United Rugby Championship and European competitions.
