Estadio Insular

Estadio Insular was designed by architect Fernando Delgado and opened on 25 December 1944, originally built for the club Marino. It became the home of UD Las Palmas in 1949 when Marino merged with CD Gran Canaria, Atlético Club Las Palmas, Real Club Victoria, and Arenas Club to form the new club. In 1951, the stadium was bought and expanded by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, the island council. For over half a century, it served as the spiritual home of football in the Canary Islands, hosting UD Las Palmas through many of their most successful seasons, including their spells in La Liga. The Spain national football team played four matches at the stadium. The first was a qualifier for the 1974 FIFA World Cup against Yugoslavia on 19 October 1972, which finished as a 2-2 draw and was the only competitive match Spain played at the ground. Three further friendly matches were played there: a 2-0 win against the Soviet Union in 1986, a 1-1 draw against Mexico in 1993, and a 1-0 win against Norway in 1996. In 2003, the Estadio Gran Canaria opened, replacing Estadio Insular as the home of Las Palmas. For 11 years, the stadium sat empty and fell into a state of disrepair. In 2014, it was partially demolished, with the South Stand the first to go. The site was then redeveloped and opened to the public as a park in 2016, preserving part of the historic structure as a reminder of its sporting past.
