Workers' Stadium
About Workers' Stadium
Workers' Stadium (工人体育场) is a state-of-the-art football stadium in Chaoyang district, Beijing, and the home of Beijing Guoan FC. Opened in April 2023 on the site of the original 1959 Workers' Stadium (demolished in 2020), the 68,000-capacity arena is one of the largest football-specific stadiums in Asia. Designed by Beijing Institute of Architectural Design, it hosted its first international match in June 2023 when Argentina beat Australia 2-0, with Lionel Messi scoring in 79 seconds. The stadium attracted an average attendance of 46,444 in 2024 — among the highest in Asia. It is connected to the Beijing subway network via Lines 3 and 17.
Historical Overview
For decades, the original Workers’ Stadium, affectionately known as Gongti, served as the heart of Beijing’s sporting life. Built in 1959 as part of the Ten Great Buildings project to mark the 10th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China, the venue hosted major events including the 1990 Asian Games and football matches during the 2008 Summer Olympics. As the facility aged, it became clear that a modern replacement was necessary to meet contemporary standards. The original structure was demolished in 2020 to make way for a state-of-the-art arena designed to serve as a premier football-specific venue. The new Workers’ Stadium officially opened its gates on April 15, 2023, marking a significant evolution in Beijing's sports infrastructure. Designed by the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design, the new stadium retains the spirit of the original site while providing a modern, world-class environment for professional football. It serves as the home ground for Beijing Guoan FC, continuing a long-standing tradition of hosting the club's passionate supporters. The stadium is now fully integrated into the city's transit network, with direct access via Beijing Subway Lines 3 and 17, solidifying its role as a central hub for the Chaoyang district. Today, the venue stands as a testament to the city's commitment to the sport, blending historical legacy with modern engineering to remain a cornerstone of the Chinese Super League.
