About Shanghai International Circuit

The Shanghai International Circuit is a purpose-built Formula One circuit in Jiading District, Shanghai. Designed by Hermann Tilke, it is known for its unique layout featuring a sweeping double-apex Turn 1 and was purpose-built to host the Chinese Grand Prix from 2004.

Historical Overview

Emerging from the marshlands of the Jiading District, the Shanghai International Circuit was conceived by local authorities as a monumental project to showcase the city to the world. Designed by renowned architect Hermann Tilke, the facility required extensive groundworks to transform former rice paddy fields into a world-class motorsport venue. Construction began in April 2003, and through the efforts of 3,000 workers, the circuit was completed in just 18 months at a cost of approximately $450 million. The venue officially opened on June 6, 2004, and has since served as the primary home for the Chinese Grand Prix, marking a significant expansion of Formula 1 into the East. The circuit is noted for its unique paddock facilities, where individual team buildings are arranged like pavilions in a lake to resemble the ancient Yu Garden in Shanghai. The track layout features a demanding combination of technical corners and a 1.2-kilometer back straight that provides a primary overtaking opportunity. While the circuit became a staple of the Formula 1 calendar, it faced a period of inactivity between 2020 and 2023 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. The Chinese Grand Prix successfully returned to the racing schedule in 2024, reaffirming the venue's status as a cornerstone of international motorsport. Beyond Formula 1, the circuit has hosted various other series, including the Shanghai ePrix and the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, continuing its legacy as a hub for competitive racing in China.

Everything you need to know about getting to Shanghai International Circuit

Getting There

The most efficient way to reach the Shanghai International Circuit is by taking the Shanghai Metro Line 11 directly to the Shanghai Circuit Station. Private car travel is generally discouraged during major race weekends as roads surrounding the circuit are often restricted to permit holders only.

Public Transport

Metro Line 11 is the primary transit artery, with the Shanghai Circuit Station located just a five-minute walk from the main entrance. During race weekends, train frequencies are significantly increased to accommodate high passenger volumes, and local bus routes such as Jiading 53, 70, 102, and 123 also serve the area.

Parking

Public parking at the circuit is extremely limited during major events like the Chinese Grand Prix. Visitors are strongly advised to avoid driving personal vehicles to the venue and instead rely on the extensive public transportation network.
