When the stadium opened on April 18, 1991, it was originally named Comiskey Park, serving as the successor to the historic venue of the same name located directly across the street. Built to bridge the gap between traditional baseball charm and modern amenities, the ballpark initially faced criticism from purists who favored the intimacy of the original structure. However, the venue quickly established its own identity, featuring a spacious design that prioritized clear sightlines and wide concourses. Over the decades, the stadium has undergone significant renovations to modernize the fan experience, including the removal of the top eight rows of the upper deck to improve sightlines and the addition of tiered social spaces and party decks. The ballpark’s cultural legacy was cemented in 2005, when it hosted the postseason run that led to the Chicago White Sox securing their first World Series title in 88 years. The stadium has seen several name changes throughout its history, transitioning to U.S. Cellular Field in 2003, Guaranteed Rate Field in 2016, and finally Rate Field in 2025 to align with the sponsor's corporate rebranding. Today, the stadium remains a vital anchor in the Armour Square neighborhood, balancing its role as a professional baseball fortress with its function as a versatile entertainment complex.
