Japan National Stadium
About Japan National Stadium
Standing as a masterpiece of modern architecture harmonized with traditional Japanese aesthetics, the Japan National Stadium is a breathtaking structure located in the heart of Tokyo's Shinjuku ward. Designed by the renowned architect Kengo Kuma, the stadium is celebrated for its 'Living Tree' concept, featuring a striking exterior defined by multi-layered eaves crafted from timber sourced from all 47 Japanese prefectures. This wooden lattice work not only pays homage to ancient temple architecture but also allows natural light and air to circulate, creating a serene environment that blends seamlessly with the lush greenery of the surrounding Meiji Jingu Gaien park. Inside, the three-tiered seating bowl accommodates approximately 67,750 spectators, offering excellent sightlines for both athletics and field sports. The color-coded seats, ranging from forest green at the bottom to white at the top, create a mosaic effect that mimics sunlight filtering through a forest canopy, ensuring the stadium never feels empty even when unoccupied. It serves as the spiritual home for Japan's national football and rugby teams, representing a pinnacle of sustainable urban design in the 21st century.
Historical Overview
Rising in the heart of Tokyo’s Shinjuku ward, the Japan National Stadium stands as a modern center for athletics and national sports. The venue was constructed on the site of the former National Olympic Stadium, which served as the primary arena for the 1964 Tokyo Games. Following the decision to replace the aging original structure, a new design was commissioned to host the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The project was led by architect Kengo Kuma in collaboration with the Taisei Corporation and Azusa Sekkei, with construction officially completed on November 30, 2019.
