Audi Field
About Audi Field
Audi Field, located in Washington, D.C., is the home of D.C. United and opened in 2018. It replaced the club’s long-time home at RFK Stadium and was built as a modern, soccer-specific venue designed to enhance the fan experience and bring the team closer to the city. With a capacity of around 20,000, the stadium is known for its steep stands and a dedicated supporters’ section called “The Wall,” which helps generate a lively and passionate atmosphere. Its waterfront location at Buzzard Point also adds to its appeal as a key part of D.C.’s growing sports and entertainment district.
Historical Overview
For over two decades, D.C. United played at RFK Stadium, a venue that witnessed the birth of an American soccer dynasty but eventually struggled with aging infrastructure. The club’s long-awaited transition to a modern, soccer-specific home concluded with the inauguration of Audi Field in July 2018. Situated at Buzzard Point at the confluence of the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers, the stadium was developed following the District of Columbia Soccer Stadium Development Act of 2014. The site, which previously housed industrial facilities, required significant land acquisition and preparation before construction officially commenced in 2017. The stadium opened on July 9, 2018, with the first match taking place on July 14, 2018, against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Architecturally, Audi Field was designed to foster intimacy and intensity, featuring a 20,000-seat capacity that keeps spectators close to the pitch. The venue serves as a centerpiece for the revitalization of the Buzzard Point neighborhood, anchoring a district that bridges Washington’s historical roots with modern urban development. Beyond its role as the home of D.C. United, the stadium has become a versatile event space, hosting a wide array of activities including NWSL matches for the Washington Spirit, collegiate football, and various cultural festivals. As a state-of-the-art facility, it reflects the maturation of professional soccer in the United States, standing as a permanent landmark in the District’s sports landscape.
