About American Express Stadium

Falmer Stadium, commonly known as the Amex Stadium, is a football stadium located in Brighton, in the area of Falmer. Opened in 2011, it is the home ground of Brighton & Hove Albion F.C.. The stadium has a seating capacity of around 31,800 and was built after many years during which the club had no permanent home stadium. The Amex Stadium hosts matches in the Premier League and other domestic competitions. It is known for its modern design and scenic location between the South Downs hills and the city of Brighton. The stadium is considered one of the most impressive newer football venues in England.

Historical Overview

The American Express Stadium, commonly referred to as the Amex, serves as the home of Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club. Its opening in July 2011 marked the end of a turbulent fourteen-year period for the club, which began with the sale of their historic Goldstone Ground in 1997. Following this, the team endured a nomadic existence, including a two-year spell sharing a ground with Gillingham and a decade playing at the makeshift Withdean athletics track. The construction of the new stadium at Falmer was a vital project for the club's survival and future, with the Buckingham Group beginning site preparation in December 2008. The stadium was officially handed over to the club on 31 May 2011, and it hosted its first competitive match shortly thereafter.
