About Allianz Stadion

The Allianz Stadion is the modern home of SK Rapid Wien, Austria's most supported football club. Opened in 2016 and replacing the beloved Gerhard Hanappi Stadion on the same site, it is the largest club-owned football stadium in Austria. SK Rapid are the only Austrian club to have won a major European trophy (the Mitropa Cup) and their passionate green-and-white fanbase is the largest in Austrian football.

Historical Overview

The Allianz Stadion, located in the Hütteldorf neighborhood of Vienna, serves as the home ground for SK Rapid Wien. It was constructed on the site of the former Gerhard Hanappi Stadion, which had served as the club's home for decades before being demolished in 2014. To facilitate the construction of the new facility, the club played its home matches at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion for two years. The project was completed in approximately 17 months, with the new stadium officially opening on July 16, 2016, with a pre-season friendly match against Chelsea FC, which the home side won 2-0. The construction, led by the contractor Strabag, cost approximately 53 million euros. Designed by ARC Architektur Concept, the stadium was built to provide a modern, intimate atmosphere for supporters, featuring steeply pitched stands that enhance the matchday experience. While known as the Allianz Stadion for sponsorship reasons, the venue is frequently referred to as the Weststadion, particularly during international competitions where sponsor names are restricted. The stadium is owned by SK Rapid Wien, providing the club with significant autonomy over its operations. Today, it stands as a central pillar of the club's identity, housing modern facilities and the Rapideum museum, which chronicles the history of Austria's most successful football club. The venue continues to host high-stakes domestic and international matches, maintaining the intense, combative spirit that has defined the club since its founding in 1899.

Everything you need to know about getting to Allianz Stadion

Getting There

The Allianz Stadion is located in the 14th district of Vienna and is best accessed via the city's extensive public transit network. If driving, the stadium is situated near the A1 Westautobahn, though matchday traffic can be heavy and parking is extremely limited.

Public Transport

The stadium is located directly at the Hütteldorf station, which serves the U4 metro line, various S-Bahn suburban trains, and regional lines. It is a short five-minute walk from the station exit to the stadium gates, making public transit the most efficient way to arrive.

Parking

Public parking directly at the stadium is practically non-existent for general visitors on matchdays. It is highly recommended to use Park and Ride facilities located at outer U4 or U2 metro stations and complete your journey into the 14th district via public transport.

Nearby Airports

Vienna International Airport is the primary gateway, located approximately 25 to 30 kilometers away. From the airport, you can take the City Airport Train or S-Bahn to the city center and transfer to the U4 metro line to reach the stadium.
