Rheinstadion

The Rheinstadion was built near the Rhine in Düsseldorf in 1925, originally designed by architect Heinrich Freese. It was renovated in 1974 to a design by Friedrich Tamms and Erwin Beyer, in part to serve as a venue for the 1974 FIFA World Cup. During that tournament, the stadium hosted three Group 3 matches and two matches in the second group stage, including West Germany's 4-2 win over Sweden on 30 June 1974, attended by 67,385 fans. The stadium was the home ground of Fortuna Düsseldorf from 1953 to 1970 and again from 1972 to 2002. Fortuna enjoyed some of their most successful periods at the ground, including reaching the 1979 DFB-Pokal final and the 1979 European Cup Winners' Cup final. The stadium was also used during UEFA Euro 1988. In 1995, the Rhein Fire of the World League of American Football (later NFL Europe) became tenants in their inaugural season, bringing American football to the venue. The stadium hosted World Bowl '99 and World Bowl X. Metallica performed at the stadium during their Nowhere Else to Roam Tour on 20 May 1993, with The Cult and Suicidal Tendencies as opening acts. By the early 2000s, the ageing stadium was no longer up to modern standards. It was demolished in the summer of 2002, after World Bowl X, and replaced by the Merkur Spiel-Arena, which opened in 2004.
