RCA Dome

Construction for the Hoosier Dome began in May 1982. The domed stadium was similar in design to the Metrodome and BC Place, owing to the involvement of engineers David Geiger and Walter Bird, pioneers in air-supported roofs. The stadium was originally named the Hoosier Dome until 1994 when RCA paid $10 million for the naming rights for 10 years. The stadium was built to lure an NFL team to Indianapolis, and as the stadium was being completed, the Baltimore Colts relocated to Indianapolis on March 29, 1984. The Dome was officially dedicated on August 11, 1984, as a sellout crowd watched the Indianapolis Colts defeat the New York Giants in an NFL preseason game. The football playing surface was originally AstroTurf, and replaced with FieldTurf in 2005. The Colts moved into the new retractable-roof Lucas Oil Stadium for the 2008 NFL season. The RCA Dome was demolished on December 20, 2008, as part of a project to expand the attached Indiana Convention Center.

The RCA Dome was originally named the Hoosier Dome until RCA purchased naming rights for $10 million in 1994. The dome was an air-supported structure made of teflon-coated fiberglass weighing 257 short tons, held up by air pressure inside the building. The ceiling was 193 feet high, varying up to 5 feet as materials expanded and contracted with weather. The largest crowd ever at the Dome was 62,167 for WrestleMania VIII in 1992. The stadium was built specifically to lure an NFL team to Indianapolis, and the Baltimore Colts relocated there in 1984 while the stadium was still being completed. At its final capacity of 55,531, it was the smallest stadium in the NFL. The dome hosted the 2006 NCAA Men's Final Four basketball championship. Warning signs were posted cautioning patrons of high winds at the doors when exiting, a feature common to air-supported dome stadiums.
