Candlestick Park

1960-2014

San Francisco, California, USA

Historical Overview

When the New York Giants arrived in San Francisco in 1958, they played at Seals Stadium before moving to the purpose-built Candlestick Park, which opened on April 12, 1960. The stadium was built at a cost of $15 million on Candlestick Point, named for the long-billed curlews that once populated the area. The San Francisco 49ers joined as co-tenants in 1971, sharing the venue with the Giants for nearly three decades. The stadium went through several name changes due to sponsorship deals, including 3Com Park at Candlestick Point (1995-2002), San Francisco Stadium at Candlestick Point (2002-2004), and Monster Park (2004-2008), before reverting to Candlestick Park in 2008. The playing surface started as natural bluegrass, switched to AstroTurf from 1970 to 1978, and was restored to natural grass in 1979. The Giants moved to Oracle Park, then called Pacific Bell Park, in 2000. The 49ers moved to Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara in 2014. The final event was a Paul McCartney concert on August 14, 2014. Demolition began on February 4, 2015, and was completed by September 24, 2015. The site is planned for redevelopment into office space.

Did You Know

The Beatles played their last full public concert at Candlestick Park on August 29, 1966. The stadium was infamous for its swirling winds, which could turn pop-up flies into adventures and made kicking field goals extremely difficult. The stadium was named after the long-billed curlews, known as 'candlestick birds', that once populated the area. The stadium went through five different names during its existence due to sponsorship deals. The 49ers won five Super Bowls while calling Candlestick home. The final event was a Paul McCartney concert on August 14, 2014, a nod to the Beatles' final concert there 48 years earlier. The stadium featured a unique 'sliding pit' configuration with dirt cut-outs around the bases during its artificial turf era. Fog frequently rolled in from the bay, creating dramatic atmospheric conditions for evening games.
