Vicente Calderón Stadium
1966-2017
Historical Overview
Construction of a new stadium to replace El Metropolitano began in 1959 but halted due to financial problems. The ground eventually opened in 1966 as the Estadio Manzanares, renamed Vicente Calderón in 1972 in honour of the long-term Atlético Madrid president. The original capacity was 62,000, expanded to 66,000 for the 1982 World Cup, before being gradually downsized to just under 55,000 by the time of its closure. A spectacular feature of the stadium was that the M-30 dual carriageway passed beneath one of the main stands. The final match was played on 28 May 2017 between a past and present Atlético side and a world XI. Atlético moved to the Metropolitano Stadium for the following season. Demolition began in February 2019 and was completed in July 2020.
