Decathlon Arena / Stade Pierre-Mauroy
About Decathlon Arena / Stade Pierre-Mauroy
Stade Pierre-Mauroy is a modern multi-purpose stadium located in Lille. Opened in 2012, it is the home ground of LOSC Lille. The stadium has a seating capacity of around 50,000 and is one of the most technologically advanced stadiums in Europe. The stadium hosts matches in Ligue 1 as well as concerts, tennis, basketball, and other large events. It is known for its versatility and modern design, allowing it to adapt for different types of sports and entertainment.
Historical Overview
Located in Villeneuve-d'Ascq within the Metropolis of Lille, the Decathlon Arena – Stade Pierre-Mauroy stands as a premier example of modern multi-purpose stadium design. Inaugurated in August 2012, the venue was constructed to provide a world-class home for the professional football club LOSC Lille, replacing their previous residence at the Stadium Lille Métropole. Initially known as the Grand Stade Lille Métropole, the stadium was renamed in June 2013 to honor the late Pierre Mauroy, a former Prime Minister of France and Mayor of Lille. The project was a significant undertaking, designed to accommodate both the intimacy of club football and the scale of major international events. The stadium is defined by its sophisticated engineering, most notably its retractable roof and a modular pitch system. This "box-in-box" configuration allows half of the pitch to be elevated and shifted over the other half, revealing a secondary concrete floor. This versatility enables the venue to transform into an indoor arena capable of hosting diverse events, including basketball, handball, tennis, and large-scale concerts. The facility is recognized as an HQE (High Environmental Quality) building, incorporating sustainable features such as solar panels and wind turbines to support its energy needs. Since its opening, the stadium has become a vital landmark for northern France, hosting marquee international competitions such as UEFA Euro 2016, the 2023 Rugby World Cup, and basketball and handball tournaments during the 2024 Summer Olympics. In 2022, the venue adopted the commercial name Decathlon Arena. Today, it remains the fourth-largest sports stadium in France, serving as a central hub for regional pride and a versatile stage for global entertainment.
